How to Replace Whirlpool Refrigerator Filters

1) Open the freezer door and turn off the ice maker. Some Whirlpool models use a wire on/off lever on the upper side of the ice maker. Flip the lever up to turn off the ice maker. Other models have an on/off switch on the side of the freezer compartment. Push the switch to "off" and close the freezer door.

2) Inspect the lower grille below the refrigerator doors, and look for a round disc with a handle. This disc connects to the water filter. Turn the handle counterclockwise with your fingers to unlock the water filter. Grab the handle and pull out the disc with the water filter.

3) Slide the disc off the protruding notch on the bottom of the water filter. Unpack the new water filter from its box and pull off the plastic cover on the tip of the filter. Slide the disc on the protruding notch on the bottom end of the new filter.

4) Hold the disc and filter in front of the hole in the refrigerator grille. Rotate the disc so the handle is pointing vertically. Insert the filter into the hole in the grill until the disc is flush against the grill. Turn the disc clockwise to lock the filter in position. The handle is horizontal when the filter is locked.

5) Fill a large glass or container with water from the water dispenser on the refrigerator door. Empty the container and fill it again. Continue filling and emptying the container until the water stream no longer has bubbles and the water is clear. Open the freezer door and turn on the ice maker.
