Kenmore Elite Washer Won't Start

1) Push the washer door firmly shut and engage the "Start/Pause" button. A Kenmore Elite washer won't start unless the door is firmly closed. Some models require that the "Start/Pause" button be held down to engage the washer while other models need you to pull out the cycle selection dial. Make sure that the washer is set to perform a wash cycle.

2) Reduce the size of the load. If you are washing towels, duvets, blankets or other large items, the washer may not be able to start due to the weight of the materials. Ensure that there is enough room inside the washer for the load to tumble and move as the drum spins.

3) Confirm that the washer's power cable is plugged directly into a grounded three-prong electrical outlet. Vibrations caused by the washer during use can jostle power cables loose from the outlet. Check that the outlet is operational by plugging another appliance into it. Check your fuse box if the outlet appears to be inactive.

4) Verify that the inlet valve screens are allowing water to flow into the washer. Clogged screens can prevent the washer from drawing water from the mains supply. The inlet valve screens can be gently cleaned with a cloth after shutting off the water and unscrewing the input pipes from the back of the washer. The screens are located just inside where the water pipes meet the washer.

5) Ensure that your Kenmore Elite washer has access to water. Turn the water shut-off valves, most commonly located at the wall, clockwise to their furthest extent or turn the lever to the "Open" position. Examine the water pipes connected to the washer and straighten out any kinked or twisted sections.

6) Contact Kenmore if the problem persists.
